Chelsea-United game confirmed
It's already a popular rumor but we just got the official confirmation at work to post on the site so I thought y'all would be interested.

July 28th
D.C. United vs. Chelsea
8pm
Live on ESPN2
from Fed Ex Field

I wish they could have played at RFK.

Cool. Glad to see confirmation. Was RFK a problem because of MLB?

There's another rumor floating around Big Soccer that AC Milan's going to be playing the Fire in Chicago.

Awesome. I saw this rumor floating around and am glad it's true. I would love to see the EPL champions play the MLS champions every year since it's a great way to compare the two.

Yeah, the Fire are going to play Milan in Chicago. I think they said it was on the 27th.

The European teams will be probably mostly B-team players but it's still nice to get this kind of exposure for MLS in both Europe and in the U.S. (see ESPN2 broadcast).

Also, no idea re: why not use RFK. The Nats aren't there that night.

The rumor is that FedEx has better capacity. The truth is that FedEx is too narrow a field. I agree that FedEx is not an ideal choice, but maybe Chelsea was worried about the conversion pitch.

It makes sense if you're making the capacity argument but, let's be a little realistic. It's a Thursday night game. Is Chelsea really going to draw 80,000? Freddy will be back (unless he's playing in the Gold Cup) but, still ... how many people are coming out mid-week to see the team Freduardo plays for now and the team he'll most likely play for in two years?

Dawg -- Both I and Steve Goff in his chat from yesterday agree with you. 30K draw, tops.

I will say this ... D.C. did draw 14,000 last night (which I thought was amazing) so at least there's some room for hope.

I think they could get closer to 50k.

People who don't normally ask me about DC United games are already asking me about this one. Could be hyu-idge. 50K at a DC United game would be a beautiful thing.

50K and I will bawl. That would be wonderful. I remember I was thrilled when the E. Conf finals outdrew the Washington Wizards home opener.

Steven Goff in the WaPost today said that the problems with the RFK pitch was the issue. I dunno if I buy that 100%, but there you go.
