We did win, didn't we?
Jeff Carlisle over at ESPN's American-only Soccernet posted his ratings for the American team for yesterday's friendly

Really, I have just one question.

We did win yesterday, right? Because reading his ratings I could have sworn that we lost 0-5.

I'm pretty sure the only reason Soccernet even covers the American game is to get bloggers like us all riled up. I don't think they could honestly assess anything if their lives depended on it.

Someone on BigSoccer put it best today when he said:

"If we lose or tie, it's our fault...if we win, the other team sucks."

I meant to say that he was describing the average whiny American soccer fan.

He actually has some perspective. :D

I agree wholeheartedly.

I think the American soccer fan is so beat down by the bashing that soccer takes in the U.S. that they're hesitant to get their hopes up because if they do, and tell their friends, and then the U.S. doesn't do well, they have to suffer the "we suck in soccer, why should I pay attention?" racket.

So, I think the American fan is inclined to think we're worse than we are to set expectations lower so as not to look bad to non-soccer fans in the U.S.

Because, honestly, there's no reason we can't beat anyone in the world (Brazil excepted). Not that we will, but we can compete.

Dawg -- I think the point you just made is very, very true, and one that is playing around the consciousness of this world cup.

Sixes and sevens, mostly. One eight. Is that bad?

Funny thing about soccer ratings -- I notice U.S. writers tend to be quite conservative in their ratings, apparently under the impression that such conservatism is traditional. But if you check out English sites, they toss out eights and nines all over the place, and you have to kick the ref in the shin to get a three.

Beau - I saw two 7's and one 8 in a game we won 5-0.

I know my ratings viewpoint are based on Championship Manager, I truly understand that.

But if my team wins 5-0, chances are at least most everyone will get a 7. Josh Wolff a 4? Sure, he wasn't great, but a 4?

Noonan, who had an assist, a 5? Hartman, who had a shutout, a 6? It looks just like someone who's being pissy for the sake of being pissy.

Hartman only deserved a 6 because while he played well, he never trule had a chance to shine. 7 is supposed to be "better games of their career" and Hartman's had better MLS games in terms of what he had to do. Now, the 4 for Wolff, who seemed to be hustling his ass off, is ridiculous.
