Welcome to the end of days ...
Real Salt Lake and the number 11.

What do those two things have in common?

Well, as of today, Real Salt Lake, the most inept looking franchise through seven games this season, now has 11 points on the season. That's one more than Chivas USA (though the Goats have two games in hand) and four more than the Galaxy. True, we're only 1/3 of a way through the season but as of this point, RSL are in the playoffs.

Let me repeat that, RSL, as of today, are in the playoffs.

Did anyone see this team play earlier this season? They were horrible. Not just Chivas USA bad (in which they battled around but couldn't seem to turn the corner), the Monarchs were flat out awful. By far the worst team in the league.

So, someone, tell me what changed? Is it just pure dumb luck that the team has caught fire just as their opponents have been eviscerated (got L.A., K.C. and the 'pids after WC callups and the Fire at the end of a 9-game road trip)? Did it just take seven games for the talent to jell? Since it's 6-6-06, can we postulate that John Ellinger really did sell his soul to the devil?

Someone fill me in. What's in the water by the Great Salt Lake?

Two words:

Jeff Cunningham.

Right, but he was there and playing for the better part of those first seven games. Did he just now get used to the air?

And, seriously, all that guy does is score goals. How does he keep ending up on the bench?

6 of Jeff's 7 goals this season have come in the last 4 games. Not coincidentally, RSL has gone unbeaten in the last 4. Without Jeff, the present situation could be very different indeed.

See also this post here, which speculates that, in addition to Jeff Cunningham, a recent re-assignment of duties for RSL GM Steve Pastorino might have something to do with RSL's recent success...
